It will be hard to miss the second-year MFA candidates of the Department of Dance at the University of Illinois this fall as they mix things up with 'Specifically Sited,' a three-week series of site-specific dance works presented throughout the Champaign-Urbana area. Performed in parking lots, parks and empty buildings, 'Specifically Sited' offers an alternative to the traditional theatre-going experience, questioning the very nature of performance through four distinct choreographic voices.
Sunday, October 30th
'Isolated Incident' by Justin Jacobs
The Tribute to Olympic Athletes in Dodds Park the corner of Mattis and Parkland Way, Champaign.
Party starts at 7:00 pm; performances begin at 8:00 and 9:00 pm
++In a bold collaboration with composer John Ritz, lighting designer Matt Reifsteck, and film director Alex Hedlund, Jacobs creates an atmosphere of bitter isolation where six dancers awkwardly struggle to find connection and security through each other. ++
Sunday, November 6th
'In An Empty Room' by Kate Corby
The 100 block of N. Walnut Street, downtown Champaign (near Bacaro restaurant)
7: 00 and 9:00 pm
++Performed in the second-floor of 118 N. Walnut Street by Megan Jupin and Ben Mielke, Corby's 'In An Empty Room' investigates the relationship between the private and the public. Watching the duet from the sidewalk across the street, the viewer is forced to straddle the line between audience member and voyeur as Jupin and Mielke push, pull, manipulate and toss one another throughout the vacant apartment above. In the age of reality television, web-cams and blogging, 'In An Empty Room' provides a live investigation of our culture’s current obsession with watching and being watched.++
Sunday, November 13th
'vacuum' by Angela Fleddermann Miller
'universe on its back' by Renata Sheppard
The top floor of the parking garage at University and Goodwin Aves, Urbana then moving to Thomas M. Siebel Center for Computer Science, 201 N. Goodwin, Urbana
6:30 and 8:30 pm
++Two site-specific dance works will be presented on Sunday, November 13th. 'vacuum,' choreographed by Angela Fleddermann Miller, will take place on the top floor of the parking garage at University and Goodwin Aves. In a stairway that leads to nowhere, the quartet of dancers explores communication and connection over long distances in this new work. Immediately following 'vacuum,' audience members will be guided to the Thomas M. Siebel Center for Computer Science to experience Renata Sheppard’s 'universe on its back. In this work a vast architectural space sets the stage for movement that challenges the brain to recalibrate its understanding of gravity. Looking up to a glass floor three levels above, the audience will view this piece lying down. Dancer Caitlin Marz is guided by an original music score created from sampled sounds of the Siebel Center and illuminated with a lighting design by Audrey Kentor. A post-performance discussion regarding both 'vacuum' and 'universe on its back' will begin in the conference room in the Siebel Center at approximately 9:30pm. ++
Admission and parking is FREE for all events. All performances will happen rain or shine. Dress for the weather.
