SPECTACLES OF THE REAL:
TRUTH AND REPRESENTATION IN ART AND LITERATURE
One Exhibit
Two Locations
Three Panel Discussions
Spectacles of the Real is an ambitious collaboration between the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) and OPENSOURCE Art, the alternative art space in downtown Champaign. The goal is to investigate the relation between realism, the "real," and the image; philosophical realism and the idea of artistic truth; and the resurgence of realism in art and literature.
At the heart of Spectacles of the Real is a jointly curated exhibit. The show, which is presented both at the IPRH and OPENSOURCE Art, will have two openings (one at each location). In addition, three panel discussions, two of them with leading national curators, have been scheduled for the IPRH. An informal reading group will accompany the event. This text contains information about all these activities.
-The Exhibit-
Opening at the IPRH
Tuesday, February 28 7:00pm
Humanities Lecture Hall, IPRH Building
805 West Pennsylvania Avenue, Urbana
Opening at OPENSOURCE Art
Thursday, March 2 8:30pm

The exhibit explores the meaning and limits of realism and its spectacular manifestations. Over twenty-five national and international artists are featured in the show, working in a variety of media, from painting and photography to video and computer art. The work at once challenges and advances the formal and ideological assumptions behind the discourse of verisimilitude. And it does so in work that ranges from political to formal (even formalist) art.
